Recruit, Train, and Retain:
Developing the Workforce for a Healthy North Carolina

Collaborative Corner

Let’s Talk About the Nursing Workforce Shortage—And What We’re Doing About It

If you’re a healthcare employer, educator, or workforce development leader in the South Piedmont region, you know the nursing shortage isn’t just a headline, it’s a daily reality. But here’s the good news. You’re not alone, and there’s a regional movement underway to tackle this challenge head-on.

The South Piedmont AHEC Workforce in Motion Collaborative is a growing network of professionals committed to building a stronger, more sustainable healthcare workforce across our eight-county region: Anson, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Stanly, and Union.

We will begin meeting regularly starting on September 18, 2025, from 2-3PM to share data, align strategies, and take action - and we want you to be part of it.

Why It Matters to You

Whether you're working to fill critical roles, improve retention, or shape the future of healthcare professionals, this collaborative initiative offers both the tools and the platform to make a meaningful impact. By leveraging real-time data from the SHEPS Center and the Talent Pipeline Management (TPM) framework, participants can identify and recruit new talent, strengthen training and education pathways, support workforce well-being and longevity, and align local efforts with broader statewide strategies.

Joining this collaborative on a regular basis provides access to regional benchmarking data and valuable peer insights. It also offers a chance to influence education and training programs, collaborate on cross-sector solutions, and stay informed about the latest workforce trends and challenges. Most importantly, it connects you with a community of professionals who share your commitment to building a stronger, more resilient healthcare workforce.

Spotlight on Statewide Innovation:
New Toolkit Connects Students to Local Healthcare Careers

The NC Health Talent Alliance has introduced a new resource designed to strengthen connections between healthcare students and employers across
North Carolina. Developed by the NC Chamber Foundation and the NC Center
on the Workforce for Health, the Student-Employer Engagement Toolkit provides a practical guide for employers to engage with students in more consistent and meaningful ways.

This toolkit helps regions build a stronger employer presence throughout the student experience. The goal is to reduce delays in licensure, improve job placement, and increase retention in local healthcare roles. It offers strategies focused on three key areas: raising awareness of local job opportunities, preparing students for the job search, and supporting their transition into the workforce.

The toolkit is a timely response to ongoing workforce challenges and is already being used through initiatives like the NC Health Talent Alliance’s Talent Pipeline Management program.

NCCCS/NCDHHS Partner to Offer Free Training Certificates
for Direct Support Professionals

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) have launched a new statewide initiative to strengthen the Direct Support Professional (DSP) workforce. Beginning this fall, three pilot colleges, Stanly Community College, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, and Forsyth Technical Community College, will offer FREE Basic and Advanced Training Certificates to both current DSPs and individuals interested in entering the field. Individuals interested in earning the certificate should contact the continuing education office at their preferred campus for registration information and the schedule.
The program consists of two eight-week, fully online courses designed to expand skills, enhance job readiness, and improve retention in a field that is critical to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The curriculum also creates a clear career pathway, with credit mobility to help participants continue their education in a community college Social and Human Services certificate, diploma, or degree.

This initiative is especially relevant to employers and educators in the South Piedmont region, where the demand for skilled DSPs continues to grow. Beginning this fall, Stanly Community College, located in the heart of the region, will offer two eight-week virtual courses designed to enhance the skills of current DSPs and provide a pathway for new entrants into the field. The program supports individuals who assist people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in living independently and accessing community resources.

This initiative is part of NCDHHS’s broader DSP Workforce Plan, which also includes recruitment campaigns and $3 million in grants to more than 140 providers to support hiring, retention, and training. If the pilot proves successful, the program could expand to additional community colleges in 2026–2027.
By investing in skill development and career advancement for DSPs, North Carolina is building a stronger, more sustainable workforce to meet the needs of communities across the state.

Pathway Spotlight: CAREERS IN FOCUS
Health Sciences Academy: Pathways to Purpose and Profession:
Empowering students through health sciences education,
engagement, and career readiness.

The Health Sciences Academy (HSA) is a collaborative initiative between Atrium Health, Union County Public Schools, and South Piedmont Community College that prepares students, K-12, for meaningful careers in health care. The partnership is designed to spark student interest in healthcare careers and build a strong, prepared talent pipeline. With a mission to inspire, educate, and connect, HSA provides students with a clear pathway into the health sciences, starting as early as elementary school. The Academy offers a powerful blend of academic preparation, career exploration, and hands-on experiences for students in Union County.

Through HSA, students have access to specialized coursework and experiences, dual enrollment options, and direct exposure to real-world healthcare settings. Whether it be through hospital education visits and tours, guest speakers, or shadowing experiences, students gain valuable insight into the diverse pathways of healthcare professions, equipping them to make informed decisions about their futures. As the demand for a skilled healthcare workforce grows, programs like HSA are critical in preparing students to not only succeed, but to lead with compassion, innovation, and community impact.

Elementary: Sparking Curiosity
At the elementary level, HSA focuses on sparking curiosity and laying the foundation for healthcare career awareness. Through interactive health science days, guest speakers, and engaging classroom activities, students begin to explore how healthcare professionals help people and improve their lives. These early experiences are designed to ignite interest and plant the seeds for future exploration.

Middle School: Exploring Pathways and Purpose
At the middle school level, the focus shifts toward deeper healthcare career exploration. Students participate in hands-on STEM and health science activities, career fairs, and mentorship opportunities. HSA programming for middle schools also continue to build on the importance of academic success, preparation, and essential skills like teamwork and communication.

High School: Preparing for the Purpose
By high school, students are fully immersed in a tailored health science track. Through specialized courses, dual enrollment with South Piedmont Community College, and real-world experiences at Atrium Health, students develop both the academic and professional skills needed for healthcare careers. Shadowing, internships, certifications, and leadership development are core to this level, allowing students to graduate with a head start toward college or careers in the healthcare field.

Why It Matters

The Health Sciences Academy addresses both workforce development needs and educational engagement. By providing students with access, exposure, and opportunity at every stage of their academic journey, HSA is building a local pipeline of compassionate, skilled healthcare professionals ready to serve their communities. As we face growing demands in the healthcare industry, programs like HSA are critical in preparing students to serve, lead, and make a lasting impact.
