Recruit, Train, and Retain:
Developing the Workforce for a Healthy North Carolina

Collaborative Corner

The South Piedmont Regional Workforce Collaborative continues to meet monthly, bringing together healthcare employers, educators, and partners with one shared goal: strengthening the nursing workforce pipeline across our region.

Over the past six months, we’ve built a strong regional foundation, aligning around a shared result, reviewing workforce data, and clarifying structure and priorities. In February, we marked a pivotal transition, moving from talk to action.

Our Action Groups have officially launched, targeting three critical priorities: Recruiting, Training, and Retaining a skilled, credentialed healthcare workforce. Each group will shape and test scalable, practical solutions that move us beyond dialogue and into aligned, measurable action, reinforced by monthly guidance and support from the regional collaborative.

Momentum is building and there is room at the table.

If you are not yet engaged but care about improving the nursing workforce in the South Piedmont Region, we invite you to join the Collaborative or participate in an Action Group. Your involvement matters because this work benefits the entire region and the more partners who participate, the greater the impact we can achieve. See Call To Action section to join this important work.

Together, we are moving from intention to impact — strengthening our nursing workforce and supporting healthier communities across the Region.

State Leaders Highlight Progress at 2026 State of Educational Attainment Meeting - Health Talent Alliance Recognized for Statewide Workforce Collaboration

State leaders, educators, and workforce partners gathered for the 2026 State of Educational Attainment meeting hosted by myFutureNC, where Governor Josh Stein and key leaders shared updates on North Carolina’s progress toward strengthening education-to-workforce pathways. The meeting emphasized long-term system alignment, cross-sector collaboration, and continued investment in strategies that prepare residents for high-demand careers.

A key highlight was the recognition of the NC Health Talent Alliance, whose leadership continues to advance collaborative workforce efforts across all 100 counties. The Health Talent Alliance’s work reflects North Carolina’s commitment to aligning education, health care, and workforce partners to address talent shortages and expand access to career opportunities.

Statewide progress toward the 2030 attainment goal remains strong. The number of adults ages 25–44 holding a postsecondary degree or industry-recognized credential has grown from 1.45 million to 1.72 million over the past five years, supported by initiatives such as the Next NC Scholarship, early college credit expansion, and increased access to need-based aid. Apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs also experienced significant growth in 2025, reinforcing the role of work-based learning in strengthening talent pipelines.

Regional partnerships were highlighted as a driving force behind this progress, with examples demonstrating how schools, community colleges, employers, and community organizations are working together to expand career pathways in health care, advanced manufacturing, and IT. Programs supporting adult learners and first-generation students, along with initiatives like NC Reconnect and the Forward Fund, continue to help remove barriers to educational attainment.

Looking ahead, leaders discussed priorities tied to the proposed Workforce Act of 2026, including expanding employer-led apprenticeships, strengthening career navigation tools, and improving access to short-term credentials and seamless education pathways.

For partners across the South Piedmont region, the meeting reinforced the value of continued collaboration and regional leadership. The recognition of the NC Health Talent Alliance highlights the impact of coordinated efforts that bring educators, employers, and workforce professionals together to build stronger pathways to opportunity across North Carolina.

Workforce Pulse: NC STATE NEWS
North Carolina Recognized as a National Leader
in Workforce Development

North Carolina has once again earned national recognition for its commitment to building a strong talent pipeline. Site Selection magazine recently ranked the state #1 in the Nation for Workforce Development for 2026, highlighting continued progress in aligning education, workforce programs, and employer needs.

The recognition comes during a period of significant economic growth. Since early 2025, businesses have announced more than $24 billion in capital investment and over 35,000 new jobs, the highest annual total in state history. These gains reflect coordinated statewide strategies preparing workers for high-growth sectors such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and health care.

Key Drivers Behind the Ranking
  • Strong alignment among K–12 education, community colleges, universities, workforce boards, Career Centers, and employers to ensure training meets labor market needs.
  • Leadership from the Governor’s Council on Workforce and Apprenticeships, advancing employer-driven career pathways and expanded apprenticeships.
  • Targeted investments in talent pipelines, including childcare workforce initiatives, veteran employment, reentry programs, and work-based learning models.
  • Support for distressed communities through strategic funding, including more than $7 million from the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission.
  • Expanded career navigation tools such as NCcareers.org, connecting nearly one million residents to training and career planning resources.
What This Means for the South Piedmont Region

For partners across Anson, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Stanly, and Union counties, this recognition reinforces the importance of continued regional collaboration. Expanded statewide investments create opportunities to strengthen apprenticeships, short-term training, and employer engagement strategies already underway through the South Piedmont Regional Workforce in Motion Collaborative.

As North Carolina continues to lead the nation in workforce innovation, this achievement reflects the collective efforts of educators, employers, workforce professionals, and community partners working together to build stronger pathways to quality jobs.

What Are Healthcare Accelerators?

The Healthcare Accelerator—created by the North Carolina Business Committee for Education (NCBCE) and Jobs for the Future (JFF) and supported by the NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), NC Community Colleges, NCWorks, and ApprenticeshipNC—serves as a bridge between innovation and implementation. It is designed to strengthen North Carolina’s healthcare and education workforce pipelines through collaboration among schools, employers, and state agencies.

What Should You Attend?

This one-day event brings together leaders in Career and Technical Education (CTE) in K-12 and postsecondary education, apprenticeship programs, and employer partners in the healthcare field to collaborate on building a stronger, more prepared healthcare workforce for North Carolina. The accelerator will focus on building high school pre-apprenticeship programs that can lead to registered apprenticeship opportunities after graduation. A proven strategy to grow and retain locally trained educators and healthcare professionals. By engaging students early and connecting them with hands on learning and mentorship, the program aims to create sustainable pathways that address workforce shortages while providing meaningful career opportunities.

Pathway Spotlight: CAREERS IN FOCUS
Regional Accelerated Nursing Pathways
Strengthen the Talent Pipeline

Across North Carolina, workforce projections continue to highlight the growing demand for nurses and the need for innovative pathways that help more learners enter the profession. Accelerated bachelor’s nursing programs across the Charlotte region are emerging as an important strategy for strengthening the healthcare workforce while creating new entry points for adult learners and career-changers.

In Fall 2025, UNC Charlotte welcomed its first accelerated nursing cohort, launching the region’s only public accelerated BSN pathway. Supported by a $2.4 million investment from the N.C. General Assembly, the university expanded faculty capacity and learning space to help second-degree students move quickly into nursing coursework and clinical training while maintaining academic rigor.

UNC Charlotte’s initiative is part of a broader regional landscape that includes accelerated programs offered by Cabarrus College, Gardner-Webb University, Johnson & Wales University, and Northeastern University. These programs typically follow full-time, sequential semester structures lasting approximately 16–18 months and combine classroom learning, simulation labs, and clinical experiences designed to prepare graduates for the NCLEX-RN.

For the South Piedmont Regional Workforce in Motion Collaborative, the growth of accelerated programs reflects a broader shift toward flexible, responsive education models that meet workforce needs. As our region continues working together to strengthen recruitment, retention, and long-term pipeline development, UNC Charlotte’s accelerated program serves as a valuable example of how targeted investment and cross-sector collaboration can help move solutions upstream building a workforce that is not only larger, but more resilient and rooted in our communities.
