This interactive session focuses on the early impacts of multiple types of dementia on brain functions (memory, expressive and receptive language, impulse control/prefrontal cortex, etc), and relationships. Creative approaches and problem-solving strategies are offered for common situations (discussing the diagnosis, making plans, optimizing communication and addressing anosognosia). This is the first session of a 2-part series, but can be taken as a stand-alone course.

Melanie Bunn is a skilled and experienced advanced practice nurse and nurse educator, conducting over 200 presentations and trainings annually to health professionals, community organizations, first responders, families and others. She is associated with Dementia Alliance of North Carolina, Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care, Bunn Consulting, and Duke University School of Nursing. Melanie received her undergraduate degree in nursing from UNC-Chapel Hill (1983), her Master’s Degree from Clemson University (1987) and a Post-Master’s Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Certificate from Duke University (1991).
