The prevalence of trauma survivors amongst the population struggling with substance use disorders is high. For these trauma survivors, substance use can serve multiple functions that are associated with experiencing trauma and/or managing traumatic stress symptoms. Participants will learn to conceptualize substance use among trauma survivors as serving functions that relate to trauma symptoms and sequelae (e.g., avoidance, efforts to manage physiological dysregulation, and efforts to manage emotion dysregulation). This training will help clinicians enhance substance use disorder treatment for trauma survivors by being able to assess and explore together with clients how trauma symptoms and sequelae might contribute to their vulnerability to substance use problems.
