Description
A person’s ability to maintain upright posture is something we don’t think about until there is a problem. Yet, balance and vestibular impairments are seen in patients with musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary dysfunction and encountered in all practice settings. Over the last several years research has provided a better understanding of the physiology of balance which has led to innovations in evaluation and treatment techniques for balance and vestibular impairments.
This course will provide a review of the physiology of the vestibular and balance systems, discuss evaluation tools for various patient populations, and demonstrate clinical treatment techniques for vestibular and balance disorders including Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), migraine-related Vestibulopathy and cervicogenic dizziness.
The course format will include lecture, small group discussion, and laboratory sessions.

Objectives
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular and balance systems
- Understand the pathophysiology of common disorders of the vestibular system
- Perform differential diagnosis of common vestibular disorders
- Perform an appropriate examination for individuals with vestibular dysfunction
- Evaluate and treat Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo
- Perform appropriate treatments for common disorders of the vestibular system
- Demonstrate balance evaluation and treatment techniques for various patient populations
- Discuss current research in support of balance training
