Each year, the NC AHEC Program accepts proposals for funding from eligible schools of nursing within the NC Community College System, the constituent institutions of the UNC System, and the NC Independent Colleges and Universities to develop new clinical training sites for nursing students. Accepted proposals may receive up to $20,000.00 per AHEC fiscal year. July 1- June 30.
The expansion of the number of quality clinical training sites and the number of students using each site is imperative to meet the increase in student enrollments. This initiative aligns with the Institute of Medicine Report on The Future of Nursing 2030 and NC Institute of Medicine’s Time for Action.
Each nursing program may submit one application for a single clinical site. Proposals should benefit both the nursing program and the clinical agency, and funds may cover educational materials and supplies, teaching tools/equipment, faculty salaries, and faculty travel to the clinical site for development. The call for proposals is issued in December of each year.
Regional AHECs may be funded for the development of preceptors at an accompanying Clinical Site Development proposal. For more information, please email May Cheung or call 704.512.6531.
As an integral part of our mission, each AHEC is committed to promoting educational mobility for all nurses. North Carolina continues to encourage more nurses to be prepared at the baccalaureate level and above. AHEC-sponsored off-campus degree programs provide flexible options for working nurses who wish to advance from RN to BSN, MSN, and PhD. Additionally, the state's need for advanced practice nurses continues to increase making accessibility of these programs even more important.
NC AHEC offers a self-paced RN Refresher Program for registered nurses who want to return to active practice. The NC AHEC RN Refresher Program is designed for RNs with an inactive license greater than 5 years. It is also available to RNs with an active license who want to update their knowledge and skills. The program consists of an online theory component and a clinical practicum. The theory component has 24 online modules which review adult nursing concepts. The modules are offered by UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing. The clinical component is 140 hours of precepted clinical experience and is coordinated by South Piedmont AHEC. Enrollment is ongoing.
