Stephen W. Ponder MD, FAAP, CDE, AADE's 2018 Diabetes Educator of the Year

Dr. Ponder is a board-certified pediatric endocrinologist with Scott and White Healthcare in Temple, Tex. A Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) since 1989, Dr. Ponder chaired the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) in 1996.
Dr. Ponder’s passion for all things diabetes care–related is fueled by his half-century of living well with the condition himself and his deep interest in inspiring others with diabetes on their own paths.
He is the creator of Sugar Surfing™ and co-author of the book of the same name. Sugar Surfing describes the discipline of diabetes self-management ‘in the moment’ using frequent pattern management enabled by either continuous glucose monitoring or frequent BG checks using a standard hand held blood sugar monitoring device.

Gary Scheiner MS, CDE, AADE's 2014 Diabetes Educator of the Year

As an award-winning Certified Diabetes Educator, Masters-level Exercise Physiologist and person with type-1 diabetes since 1985, Gary Scheiner has dedicated his professional life to improving the lives of people with insulin-dependent diabetes.
Gary has authored six books: You Can Control Diabetes (1997), Think Like A Pancreas (2004), The Ultimate Guide to Accurate Carb Counting (2007), Get Control of Your Blood Sugar (2009), Think Like A Pancreas, 2nd edition (2011), and Until There’s A Cure (2012) as well as dozens of published articles related to diabetes education for consumer and trade magazines and diabetes websites.

Course Outcome
This conference will provide participants with information on various aspects of current diabetes management, including new trends in diabetes care and treatment.

6.0 Contact Hours/ 0.6 CEUS

6.0 Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Contact Hours will be provided to those who attend at least 90% of the program.
Charlotte AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

The University of North Carolina Eshelman School Of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
The program ACPE# 0046-9999-18-133-L01-P (Pharmacist) provides 6.00 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit. To receive CE credit, you must complete the CE attendance form and the evaluation of the program. Statement of credit can be viewed and printed in CPE Monitor.   • Define the 4 core elements of the SURF acronym.
  • Explaine how inflection points are used in diabetes self management
  • Comprehend the essential roles physical activity plays in diabetes treatment
  • Apply strategies to minimize the risks associated with exercise in the diabetes population
  • Design individualized exercise prescriptions for patients with diabetes
  • Compare and contrast available safety, efficacy and cardiovascular outcomes data of available treatment options for type 2 diabetes
  • Describe the ketogenic diet guidelines.
  • Outline the implications of the ketogenic diet on overall health in people with diabetes, including glucose control.
  • Discuss the role of nutrition on the reduction of inflammation and enhanced metabolism
  • Describe management of diabetes in children in day care and school settings.
  • Identify appropriate methods for constructing a healthy meal using food models
  • Recognize and be able to briefly counsel patients on appropriate portion sizes of foods, food categories and meal balance
  • Outline the benefits of a non-diet, weight neutral framework for diabetes intervention
  • Define the Intuitive Eating model and describe how to implement in the context of diabetes treatment.
  • Describe a multidisciplinary approach to diabetes management and how it can impact patient outcomes
