Description

Researchers, clinicians and policy makers are beginning to recognize the importance of social determinants as contributors to the health of patients and communities. The County Health Rankings model (http://www.countyhealthrankings.org/explore-health-rankings/what-and-why-we-rank) suggests that social and economic factors contribute to 40% of the quality of life and length of life of communities, which is twice as much as the contribution of clinical care. Participants will begin with an overview of the impact of poverty, a key social determinant, on health and health care in our state, and efforts focused on addressing this determinant to improve the overall care of communities.The morning will end with a poverty simulation where they will be exposed to the realities of poverty, including the challenges of navigating the complex world of government services and other essential service providers.
