Teach the Teacher: Tips for Successful Precepting

Target Audience

Nurses who precept clinical nursing students including RN Refresher students.

Description

Sponsored by NC AHEC, this live webinar is designed to prepare nurse preceptors who work with clinical nursing students including RN Refreshers. Topics include: the preceptor role, adult learning principles, strategies to enhance clinical performance, managing difficult behaviors, communication, and principles of giving feedback and the evaluation process. Legal implications of being a nurse preceptor will also be discussed.

Participants will receive a complimentary preceptor book.

8:30 am – 10:15 am Description of the preceptor role; Differentiation between preceptorship and mentorship; Preceptor qualities

10:15 am - 10:30 am Break

10:30 am - 12:00 pm Principles of adult learning, Communication strategies to enhance the preceptor experience; Teaching strategies

12 pm - 1 pm Lunch

1 pm - 2:15 pm Strategies to facilitate preceptee competence; Critical thinking

2:15 pm - 2:30 pm Break

2:30 pm - 4 pm How to manage challenging performance behaviors; Legal considerations for preceptors


Faculty:

Pam A. Collins, MSN, CMSRN, NPD-BC

Pam is an educator at heart! She has 40 years of varied nursing experiences which include nurse educator in the hospital and academic settings, leadership/administrative roles and consultant for Education and Professional Development. Pam’s leadership experience includes nurse manager, director, and CEO. Her clinical expertise is primarily medical-surgical nursing and she is a published author of medical-surgical topics. Pam also has an extensive background in the legal and ethical aspects of nursing practice. She presents locally and nationally on leadership and legal/ethical topics in healthcare.

Learning Outcome:
To provide up-to-date best practices and educational learning opportunities which support the development of nurse preceptors working with clinical nursing students including RN Refresher students.

Credits
6.0 Nursing Contact Hours will be provided to nurses who attend at least 90% of the conference. No partial credit will be provided.
Charlotte Area Health Education Nursing Education (Charlotte AHEC) is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Explore strategies to facilitate clinical competence of preceptees. 7. Identify strategies for dealing with challenging behaviors. 8. Examine legal considerations for Preceptors.
