Description

The tendency of Americans to avoid talking about death can lead to many negative consequences and unnecessary suffering. In this class, we will explore some of these consequences and how innovative conversation games such as “Hello” can help people break through cultural barriers to 1) be able to think and talk more freely about death and 2) envision what would constitute a “good death.” We will cover a variety of interesting topics such as gamification, the Death Positive Movement and advance care planning.

Each participant that attends the workshop in its entirety will receive a boxed copy of the Hello Game set.

Objectives

• Discuss how the reluctance of Americans to discuss death can lead to poor end-of-life outcomes and negatively impact the well-being of patients, family and even clinicians
• Discuss the concept of a “good death” and its connection to advance care planning
• Discuss how the death positive movement and games like “Hello” seek to overcome barriers that prevent people from thinking and talking freely about mortality
• Discuss facilitation strategies for Hello and Hi games
• Play the Hi abbreviated version of Hello during class
