Previous youth violence prevention conferences have touched on the potential role of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) as a risk factor for future involvement in violence for our youth. This year, we examine another ACE, Adverse Community Environments, and the role that it might play in contributing to violence, both at the individual and the community level. These adverse community environments —-factors such as poverty, sub-standard schools, and food insecurity, to name just a few— are known to be a major determinant of health outcomes in the U. S. and are now felt to also be major determinants of violence, helping to explain why violence tends to occur in specific communities and not in others. This year‘s Youth Violence Prevention Conference focuses on these adverse community environments, and how we can leverage local community resources to reduce interpersonal violence in all of our communities.

Objectives

• Understand the concept of adverse community environments and how these might contribute to violence at the individual and community level.
• Identify specific adverse community environments, and how addressing these factors can fortify a community’s resilience to violence.
• Identify the agencies that are already working to reduce specific adverse community environments locally, and how partnering with them can bring about significant and sustained reductions in violence in our community.
