This Training is funded through the Mecklenburg County Health Department (MCHD) Health Literacy and COVID-19 Plan, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health (OMH) grant initiative.
What does COVID have to do with PTSD? A lot! This program is designed to facilitate discussion on the impact of COVID among individuals across the lifespan, with a focus on mental health and the parallel traumatic impacts that COVID can present to individuals across the lifespan. Professionals providing services to individuals must have a general understanding of how COVID-19 may impact the mental well-being for individuals that they serve to respond in the most appropriate way that facilitates resiliency and healing in the face of the pandemic. Tips, tools, and resources will be provided that move toward a trauma-informed response to PTSD and COVID-19.
This program is designed for community health workers, community advocates and health educators. The course will address the skills required for effective patient education. These include, health literacy assessment, reading, writing, listening, speaking, numeracy, and critical analysis as well as communication and interaction skills. The participant will have the opportunity within the program to practice the use of plain language and teach back methods as effective tools to communicate and confirm patient understanding. Additional information on educational and community resources for the health care educator will be discussed.
