The American Psychological Association defines TRAUMA as an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape, or natural disaster. Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea.
Charlotte AHEC has partnered with HOPEWAY to develop a series to discuss the topic of Trauma.
This series will focus on gaining a better understanding of trauma by reviewing the diagnostic criteria for PTSD, clinical assessment tools, evidence-based treatment modalities, emerging approaches to trauma treatment and more. Clinicians will broaden their knowledge of trauma treatment while gaining additional tools to use in their own practice.
This training series has been developed in partnership with HopeWay.
Session Information
Each session is $15. Or you can attend ALL THREE sessions for $40.
Each session will be from 12:00pm - 1:30pm on the scheduled day and qualifies for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit.
Session 1 - Defining, Diagnosing and Assessing Trauma
Date/Time - Wednesday, June 7, 2023 (12:00 - 1:30pm)
Speakers - Justin Johnson, MD & Ross Cole, LCSW
Learning Objectives:
1. Define categories of trauma.
2. Explain the diagnosis of PTSD.
3. Recognize common conditions that may be trauma-related or co-morbid with PTSD.
4. Identify tools for assessing trauma/PTSD.
Session 2 - Evidence-based Treatment for PTSD
Date/Time - Wednesday, June 14, 2023 (12:00 - 1:30pm)

Learning Objectives:
1. Highlight medications/medical treatment for PTSD.
2. Describe evidence-based treatments for PTSD, including EMDR, Prolonged Exposure, and Cognitive Processing Therapy.
3. Discuss other treatments for PTSD with emerging evidence.
Session 3 - Alternative & Emerging Approaches for PTSD Treatment
Date/Time - Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (12:00 - 1:30pm)
Speakers - Ren Brown, LPC, LCMHCA, CCTP, ISTT, EMDR-Trained & Marianne Huebner, MS-ATR
Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss alternative treatments for PTSD (meditation/mindfulness, yoga, etc).
2. Define integrative therapies to treat trauma (art therapy, music therapy and horticultural therapy).
