Description

The evaluation and treatment of feeding disorders in children is a rapidly growing field in the United States. Feeding difficulties in children range from picky eaters to patients with severe dysphagia limiting their ability to eat and drink normally. An estimated 1 in 4 normally developing children and 8 in 10 children with special needs experience feeding problems. Feeding issues greatly impact a child’s physical, mental, social and emotional development, thus management of the feeding issues should be a priority. It is commonplace for therapy clinics to offer feeding therapy for children, but most therapy locations across the country lack the ability to provide multidisciplinary care and medical management of the disorder. Feeding disorders are multidimensional, often encapsulating issues with oral motor development, swallowing, sensory processing, gastrointestinal tract disorders, allergies, behavior and other factors. To properly treat a child with a feeding problem, these should all be evaluated.

This two-day, in-person workshop will provide participants with evaluation and treatment strategies for medically complex infants and children from the perspective of a gastroenterologist, developmental and behavioral pediatric nurse practitioner, speech-language pathologist, and dietician.

The Levine Children’s Feeding Center team is experienced in treating children with all types of feeding problems. Each child is evaluated by a physician, nurse practitioner, speech-language pathologist, dietitian and clinical social worker who provide compassionate and comprehensive care to infants, children and teens with various feeding disabilities and behaviors. The number of different disciplines represented by the team, and the fact that the whole team meets with each family together, make Levine Children’s Feeding Center unique to the region. The team currently follows a consultative model, most often meeting with patients and families quarterly. The goal is to provide a multidisciplinary approach to evaluating infants and children with feeding problems, to ensure their families have the support services they need within the community, and to work with the family to achieve their goals for feeding success.
