Description

The Cultural Sensitivity Training (CST) was developed to facilitate better communication between foreign-born community members and the service providers who work with them. The purpose of this training is to provide healthcare workers, social service providers, first responders, and community health workers with the skills and resources they need to provide equitable and appropriate services to foreign-born families, including immigrants, refugees, and international visitors. Oftentimes, service providers like healthcare practitioners, school administrators, social workers, etc. are provided with translation tools, however, providers don’t always receive training on the best practices for utilizing these tools, or training on how to navigate cultural differences with patients or clients. With the state of North Carolina becoming increasingly diverse each year, there’s more need than ever for healthcare professionals to look for ways to provide equitable services to every individual, regardless of a patient’s cultural background or language skills.

Objectives

  • Define culture and navigate cultural differences between healthcare providers and their patients.
  • Understand differences in both verbal and nonverbal communication styles with foreign-born patients.
  • Demonstrate best practices for utilizing translation and interpretation tools with non-English speaking patients.
  • Identify ways to integrate culturally responsive efforts into daily practice, as a means of increasing equity among diverse populations.
