Description

This event provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals and community members to come together to share best practices and practical information that will address the health inequities and disparities faced by the LGBTQ+ population. The symposium is dedicated to improving healthcare systems, inspiring hope and better providing equitable and accessible healthcare for LGBTQ+ patients.

The participants will be able to gain knowledge about the unique health considerations and barriers for the LGBTQ population and best practices and practical information that will lead to improving healthcare systems and better provide equitable and accessible healthcare for LGBTQ population.

Objectives

  • SIMMONS:Describe trends in LGBTQ+ policy at the state level in 2024 and the impact of policy on population health.
  • GEIGER: Describe Gender Dysphoria and the purpose of Gender Affirming Care (GAC)
  • GEIGER: Identify mental health disparities of Trans and Gender Diverse (TGD) population and the impact of stigma, discrimination, and minority stress.
  • GEIGER: discuss barriers to implementing and receiving gender affirming care and implications for transgender diverse individuals.
  • GEIGER:Discuss current research in the benefits of gender affirming care and explore professional and clinical recommendations.
  • STEIN+BERKMAN: Describe the extent and type of disrespectful and inadequate care experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals and their partners when receiving care for serious illness, including oncology, hospice, and palliative care
  • STEIN + BERKMAN: Describe and develop potential recommendations to address disparities in care, including staff training, institutional practice, policy remedies, and advocacy for changes in public policy.
  • STEIN + BERKMAN: Describe the personal impact of discriminatory serious illness care on LGBTQ+ patients and partners.
  • PANEL DISCUSSION: Define WPATH (World Assn for Transgender Health.
  • PANEL DISCUSSION: Discuss the requirements/guidelines/indications for hormone therapy per WPATH and Endocrine Society.
  • PANEL DISCUSSION: Discuss counseling future fertility needs/concerns in adults and children.
  • CORRIGAN: Describe the types of online spaces and the benefits and opportunities the platforms offer.
  • CORRIGAN: Discuss the specific risks of online spaces.
  • CORRIGAN: Discuss tips for maximizing online opportunities.
  • PANEL DISCUSSION: Discuss contraindications regarding the use hormone therapy.
  • PANEL DISCUSSION: Discuss the impact of the NC legislative changes on the care that can be provided to teens/children.
  • SHANNON: Discuss the concepts included in the program as ways to better provide equitable and accessible healthcare for LGBTQ+ patients.
