Use of self refers specifically to the ways in which a therapist draws upon their own feelings, experiences and personality to enhance the therapeutic process. We are shaped by our social contexts, cultural influences and the families who raise us. In a field of people helping people, this means the ways we are shaped constantly intersect with the ways our clients are shaped. Different experiences can be related through shared emotions while similar experiences may elicit completely different emotional reactions. Studies show that those in the field of counseling, upwards of 60% of us have significant unresolved issues which potentially can interfere with the therapeutic relationship. The ways we are shaped and how we process our experiences determines how our therapeutic styles are formed. This experiential workshop will elicit participant involvement to explore a use of self model, utilize real life scenarios and have participants walk away with practical interventions to apply with their clients and in their own supervision.
