This training is brought to you in partnership between South Piedmont AHEC and North Carolina's Department of Health and Human Services.
Understanding resistance to ADLs is crucial for healthcare workers in skilled nursing facilities. ADLs include essential tasks like bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility. When residents resist these activities, it can be challenging to provide necessary care.
Recognizing the reasons behind resistance, such as fear, discomfort, or cognitive impairments, helps healthcare workers develop compassionate strategies. This fosters cooperation and trust, ensuring residents' needs are met while maintaining their dignity and independence.
Online Learning: Managing Resistance to ADLs
Welcome to our training module on managing resistance to ADLs in older adults. This course includes engaging recorded presentations and interactive activities. Completion requires passing a post-test.
This course addresses behaviors that interfere with performing or assisting with ADLs, including bathing, eating, toileting, dressing, and grooming. We will identify the significant consequences of resisting care, such as malnutrition, skin breakdown, dehydration, constipation, and weight loss. Additionally, this training will discuss key strategies for effective interventions, emphasizing creativity, flexibility, and patience.
