This program is being offered in cooperation with UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing

In this course, you will learn how to identify and assess the most common health emergencies that school-age children may face, such as asthma, anaphylaxis, seizures, and head injuries. You will also learn to recognize red flags in your physical assessment of the child, covering the relevant body systems and exam skills. The course aims to boost your confidence and competence as a school nurse and to improve the health and safety of the children in your care.

Participants will be able to recognize signs and symptoms and implement appropriate care/treatments for common pediatric health emergencies.

  • Describe signs/symptoms and of the most common gastrointestinal/genitourinary emergencies in children
  • Describe the symptoms and treatment of the most common cardiac emergencies in children
  • Describe signs/symptoms and treatment of the most common orthopedic emergencies in children
  • Identify signs/symptoms and treatment of the most common neurological emergencies in children
  • Distinguish the difference between signs/symptoms of the most common skin emergencies
  • Describe signs/symptoms and treatment of the most common dental and eye emergencies in children
