Poor mental health is an oft-cited risk factor for interpersonal violence, but the converse is also true— that interpersonal violence, whether experienced directly or indirectly, can have significant adverse mental health consequences, particularly for younger children and adolescents. This year's youth violence prevention conference places young people from our own community squarely in the center of a frank conversation about the overall mental health of today’s youth, and whether we, as a community, are doing enough to address their needs and concerns. Through interactive presentations, panel discussions and breakout sessions led by local mental health experts, you’ll be able to recognize earlier the young person in need of acute mental health support, and you’ll be more familiar with the available mental health resources and how to access them. Most importantly, you will gain a greater appreciation for the link between mental health and youth violence, and how we will not successfully address either of these two challenges without addressing the other.

  • Understand the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and trauma on youth behavior, and how these experiences can result in either violence perpetration or violent victimization later in life.
  • Gain awareness of the many ways that young people struggling with their mental health may present, thereby facilitating earlier support, intervention and referral.
  • Become more aware of the mental health resources available to support youth in our community, and how these resources can be accessed.
