Sometimes, stabilizing individuals and addressing the root causes of trauma through short-term, evidence-based therapy is necessary before diving into trauma treatment. Other times, presenting problems may be caused or reinforced by additional factors that need to be prioritized. Leveraging decades of experience with children and families, participants will have the opportunity to explore the assessment and contextualization of trauma and its sequela in young people and identify appropriate treatment options. The importance of treating young people within the family context and practicing self-care to manage the emotional demands of trauma work will be underscored.
This workshop is designed to guide therapists in navigating the complex landscape of treatment options for trauma-related symptoms and behaviors in young people. It emphasizes the importance of understanding that attributing behavioral struggles solely to trauma-related experiences may be insufficient. Instead, it's crucial to view these experiences and symptoms along a continuum and within their context. Therapists are tasked with uncovering the intricate relationship between internalizing and externalizing behaviors and trauma, while balancing the idea that not all experiences lead to PTSD or require trauma treatment.
