Comprehensive clinical assessments typically have a section that assesses substance use disorders (SUDs). Substance use is a complex behavior with many factors to consider in determining the impact on the individual being assessed. Type and strength of the substance, patterns of use, route of administration, and psychosocial factors are just a few of these factors. Gathering this information from the individual can be further complicated by the use of street slang to describe their use and by explicit and implicit biases held by the clinician. In this course, participants will discuss the many factors to consider in determining the impact on the individual being assessed, gain information about common street slang used to describe substance use, explore their own biases about substance use, and review DSM-5-TR criteria for SUDs. To guide these activities participants will engage in open discussions about their current knowledge of the aforementioned topics, engage in assessing case studies, and be presented with findings from research on biases in substance treatment settings.
