Individuals who use wheelchairs often encounter hidden challenges that affect their independence and quality of life. This three-part Lunch and Learn Series is designed to equip therapists with practical knowledge and conversation tools to better support their clients. Topics include exploring advanced wheelchair considerations, travel tips and tools, and disability laws, and advocating for accessibility.

Each presentation will be from 12:00 pm EST - 1:00 pm EST on the scheduled day and qualifies for 1 hour of continuing education credit. (Up to 3 Hours)

Wednesday, October 15, 2025 (12:00 pm EST- 1:00 pm EST): Beyond the Ramp and Reacher
This session is designed to highlight many of the nuances of home and community access using a wheelchair and help therapists deepen their understanding and knowledge of wheelchair mobility and environmental modifications. Taught from the first-person perspective of an OT in a wheelchair, this course goes beyond the basics to cover rarely discussed topics in the areas of community mobility (including escalators), travel, home modifications, and functional wheelchair tips.
Wednesday, October 22, 2025 (12:00 pm EST- 1:00 pm EST): Tips, Tricks, and Tools for Traveling in a Wheelchair
This session provides practical strategies and resources to help clients with disabilities travel more confidently and successfully. Drawing on ADA and Air Carrier Access Act protections, Dr. Sorensen will highlight key considerations for air travel, lodging, transportation, and daily activities, while offering solutions to common accessibility challenges. Attendees will leave with actionable tools to prepare clients for safe, accessible, and enjoyable travel experiences
Wednesday, October 29, 2025 (12:00 pm EST- 1:00 pm EST): Know the Rights of Your Clients: ADA and Other Disability Laws Everyone Needs to Know
Clients with disabilities are protected by laws including the ADA, FHA, AACA, and others that safeguard their rights in the areas of work, home, public and private entities, transportation, and communication. However, many individuals with disabilities - and even healthcare professionals - are unaware of these legal protections. This course equips therapists with an understanding of the laws that protect their clients and gives them tools to support clients in living life to the fullest.

Kathryn L. Sorensen , OTD, OTR/L, ADAC
Kathryn is an Associate Clinical Professor and Academic Fieldwork Coordinator in the Divisionon Occupational Science and Occupational Therapt at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a certified ADA specialist loves to advocate for and educate others about the ADA law, both within her community and the healthcare profession. As a person who uses a wheelchair, she has a passion for ensuring that other people with disabilities have access to the same meaningful activities as everyone else! Her favorite occupations include: rooting for her UNC Tar Heels and USC Trojans, traveling, spending time with friends and family, cooking, reading, and engaging in a competitive game of musical chairs.
