Target Audience

Social workers, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, educators, school personnel, mental health professionals, clinicians, health and human service practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, and other health care professionals.

Description

This program is designed to introduce the concepts and implementation of trauma informed care using an applied approach. Research and clinical evidence documents that trauma informed approaches in school settings includes an understanding of trauma and an awareness of the impact and effects on children in the classroom. It involves thinking about trauma in different ways and altering approaches and strategies to provide opportunities for children to rebuild a sense of control, empowerment, and mastery in their environment to create successful learning.

The workshop is interactive and will incorporate participants’ experiences, questions, and concerns related to implementation of trauma informed approaches to care. Participants will leave the session with a deeper awareness of the prevalence and impact of trauma, the importance of building resilience, and practical strategies that continually move students toward success.

Objectives

  • Develop an awareness of the prevalence and impact of trauma across development, including how trauma impacts the learning process and the developing brain
  • Understand the core components of trauma informed approaches and articulate the need for implementation of these components in school settings
  • Create a shared language using trauma-informed principles that drives how we work with each other and how we work with students
  • Examine real-life examples within the school setting in which trauma-informed principles can be applied
  • Identify tools and strategies for implementation of trauma informed care within school settings
