Target Audience

The Peace in Practice Learning Series, hosted by Mecklenburg County Public Health’s Office of Violence Prevention in partnership with South Piedmont AHEC, is designed for community-based organizations, non-profits, community leaders, county service providers, and behavioral health, public health, and clinical professionals working to prevent violence, promote healing, and strengthen community well-being in Mecklenburg County.

Join us for Session 4 of the Peace in Practice Learning Series.


From Toxic to Transformative: Ideals of Masculinity and Its Connection to Community Violence

This facilitated session will examine the complex relationship between perceptions of masculinity and their influence on community violence. Utilizing an intersectional approach, the facilitator will lead participants through interactive activities and discussions designed to analyze how socialization processes and ideals of masculinity may contribute to violent behaviors. The session aims to foster a respectful, open environment for dialogue, encouraging participants to consider societal norms, cultural factors, and personal experiences that inform their understanding of masculinity and its connection to violence.

Objectives

  • Define masculinity and describe how social and cultural norms shape common perceptions of masculinity and manhood.
  • Analyze the influence of media and role models in shaping societal expectations of masculinity and their potential connection to harmful behaviors and violence.
  • Identify community-based strategies that challenge harmful norms and promote healthier, nonviolent expressions of masculinity and manhood.
