This course is designed for Registered Nurses who plan to teach the NC Board of Nursing curriculum to Medication Aides working in skilled nursing facilities.
Criteria for RN Medication Aide Teachers:
Participants must meet the North Carolina Board of Nursing prerequisites:
a. Have an active, unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina.
b. Have at least 2 years of practice experience as a registered nurse that includes medication administration.
Once a participant successfully completes the course, the participant will be able to apply for certification as a Medication Aide Instructor with the NC BON.
The following materials are designed to prepare the medication aide students to assume the role of the Medication Aide and to provide information that he/she will need to perform the basic competencies required to administer oral, buccal, sublingual, ophthalmic, nasal, topical, inhalant, vaginal, and rectal medications. They include the instructor’s manual, student manual, and a video packaged as a USB flash drive. Each educator will infuse the material with his/her presentation style, but the content is not to be altered, skipped or deviated from throughout the course presentation.
Medication aides were approved to practice in skilled nursing facilities (SNF, also known as long term care) in Senate Bill 622 August of 2005. The law became effective July 1, 2006, and State Division of Facility Services (DFS) rules for SNF became effective October 1, 2006. For more information about the Medication Aide laws and rules, please visit the North Carolina Board of Nursing website at www.ncbon.com
