Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a complex injury with a broad spectrum of symptoms and disabilities. No two brain injuries are alike and the consequence of two similar injuries may be very different. This program will discuss multidisciplinary best practices for optimal outcomes across the continuum of care when working with patients who have had concussions to severe TBI's.

Credit:
Physical Therapy:
Charlotte AHEC, NC AHEC system, is an approved provider by the North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiners with regard to activities directly related to physical therapy for continued competence.

Occupational Therapy:
As of July 1, 2018, the NCBOT no longer accepts applications for pre-approval of CCAs. OT practitioners need to make sure they are completing activities that comply with Section .0800 of the NCBOT Rules.

Speech Therapy:
Charlotte AHEC will issue Certificates of Maintenance only; the participant must self-track and record the certificate for ASHA Certification documentation.

Nursing:
6.75 CNE Contact Hours will be issued for each day of the conference.
Nurses must sign in each day and complete the online program evaluation in order to receive the CNE credit for that day.
Attendance of at least 90% of the program is required to receive credit. No partial credit will be provided.

Charlotte AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.


Program Outcome
Day 1: Participants will be able to discuss multidisciplinary best practices for optimal outcomes across the continuum of care when working with patients who have had concussions.

Day 2: Participants will be able to discuss multidisciplinary best practices for optimal outcomes across the continuum of care when working with patients who have with severe traumatic brain injuries.

Objectives

  • Participants will be able to discuss the role of wellness as the foundation of physical and cognitive performance status post-concussion.
  • Participants will verbalize/demonstrate understanding of the primary physical issues associated with concussion, assessment procedures and treatment methods.
  • Participants will verbalize understanding of the state laws governing return to learn and return to play in North Carolina.
  • Participants will understand specific areas of cognitive-linguistic concern, evaluation tools and management strategies to address decreased functioning in patients with acute concussion and those with persisting symptoms following concussion.
  • Participants will be able to discuss multidisciplinary treatment strategies appropriate to use when addressing goals for people after moderate to severe TBI.
  • Participants will understand anatomic and physiologic reasons for agitated behavior following brain injury.
  • Participants will understand pharmacology for medications used to treat agitation following brain injury.
  • Participants will learn strategies and interventions to minimize the frequency, duration and intensity of agitation following brain injury.
  • Participants will be able to list recommended outcome measures to objectively describe agitated behaviors following brain injury.
