Community Health Workers (CHWs) are a relatively new addition to the healthcare workforce who add tremendous value by helping people get better health outcomes. CHWs continue to expand into new and different care settings beyond traditional primary care practice. South Piedmont AHEC is proud to announce a learning event where individuals can both find inspiration and learn skills by job shadowing CHWs working in the Maternal Health specialty.
This shadowing experience allows participants to become part of the Care Ring Maternal CHW team for a day, observing techniques and helping CHWs improve health outcomes for mothers and babies. This program is designed for CHW students, current CHWs interested in learning about new CHW skills and individuals interested in possibly becoming a CHW.
Our event utilizes Care Ring’s “A Guided Journey (AGJ) Community Health Worker, a program launched in partnership with Mecklenburg County Public Health in 2021. The program targets the six Mecklenburg County priority health zip codes and focuses on improving health outcomes before, during and after pregnancy and reducing racial and ethnic disparities in infant mortality and adverse perinatal outcomes. Early and regular prenatal (before baby is born) and postpartum (after baby is born) care is an important step in protecting the health of a mother and child. Pregnant women and those up to 90 days postpartum are connected with an AGJ Community Health Worker (CHW) who can serve that family until the child is two years old.
This shadowing experience is excellent for: 1) Community Health Worker Students, 2) Current Community Health Workers seeking to broaden their skill set, 3) Individuals considering becoming a Community Health Worker.

What is Shadowing?
Shadowing is a short-term experience where a learner follows and observes a worker in a professional environment. In essence, when you participate this shadowing experience, you’re staying in the “shadow” of an employee, going where they go and doing what they do throughout the day. Think of it like a “day-in-the-life” experience where you get to see exactly what certain professionals do all day.
As you go through your job shadowing program, you’ll get to see the real-life, non-textbook version of a specific job environment. Not only will you observe the main day-to-day tasks, but you’ll also discover nuances you hadn’t considered and get one-on-one access to a person who has real experience in the field. In other words, when you shadow, you’re effectively giving yourself a behind-the-scenes look at a certain career path.
At the end of the experience, you’ll be able to answer questions like:
- Can I see myself working in this field for my entire career?
- Would I feel fulfilled and rewarded on a daily basis?
- Would I leave each day feeling stressed or worried?
- Do I have the personality, soft skills, and knowledge to work in this field?
- Would I enjoy working with people?
- Would the skills I observe enrich my ability to help other people?

It doesn’t matter if you’re a future tradesperson planning to follow a worker for a day, an officer-in-training heading out for a ride-along experience, or a pre-med student getting ready to shadow at a hospital, the preparation is the same!
